It’s been 25 years since the Dino Martinis first mixed their unique cocktail of swing, fun and Vegas glam … which seems like a pretty good excuse to throw a party!
On Saturday, June 22, the band will showcase many of their much-loved original songs during a special edition of Stampede City Sessions in the beautiful Webber Academy Performing Arts Centre Theatre (1515-93 St. SW, Calgary, AB.) The program will be recorded for a one-hour special that will air on Spokane’s PBS affiliate KSPS TV, who service the NW United States and Western Canada. Stampede City Sessions also airs on East Tennessee PBS and WKNO Memphis PBS with a total potential reach of 3.3 million households. The Episodes air just before Austin City Limits on Saturday evenings on KSPS and just after ACL on East TN PBS.
The Stampede City Sessions show is part of a year which will also feature the band (fittingly) launching their own branded (refined and very smooth!) gin, hand-crafted by Tippa, an Okotoks-based, artisanal, small-batch gin distillery.
It’s been a wild quarter-century-cocktail party for the Dino Martinis. They’ve released three popular original music discs, appeared on several international compilations, played Japan and toured Canada, the United States and Europe.
The group has played for members of the Japanese royal family and Hollywood royalty – sharing the stage with Tom Hanks (and annoying Glenn Frey.) They’ve played iconic rooms like LA’s Brown Derby and the Viper Room, and played Windows on the World, on the top of the World Trade Centre, shortly before 9-11. The Dinos continue to play regularly as Alberta’s leading wedding, corporate and gala band.
“It’s been a terrific ride to this point,” reflects the band’s leader, guitarist and songwriter Brent Kawchuk. “But I like to think it’s all because we really love the music – swing, jump blues and soul. I think that’s always translated. Like Louis Prima and many of our favourite performers, we also believe our job is to make every party, every night we play unforgettable, and I think June 22 will be another of those nights.”
The Dinos will transform the Webber Academy theatre into 50’s era Casbah lounge in Las Vegas. The Dinos have invited their pals The Love Bullies to share the bill for a night that will shake and stir everybody in the audience.
Current Dinos ( Brent Kawchuk guitar, Loree MacDonald and Diana Thomas, vocals, Demetrio Navarro keyboards, Scott Lauchlan, drums and Don McSwiney, bass) will be joined by original lead singer Nico Brennan and former drummer Tyler Hornby. The band has also invited swinging trumpet-playing crooner, Johnny Summers, and members of his fabulous band to share the stage with them. There will also be cameos from fellow quarter-centenarians the Heebee Jeebies, former Calgary poet laureate / singer songwriter Kris Demeanor, multiple award winner Kate Stevens and many more.
“We’re wait to see our fans who have been asking us to play our own material again in a public show,” says Kawchuk, “You won’t want to miss this one, it’s going to be a helluva night!”
